All Rug Types, All Origins

Rug CleaningLike all beautiful things, rugs eventually perish. However, with the best available care and attention to cleaning and preserving, you can make sure your rug remains in its optimum state for as long as possible. As with all things of value, certain precautions must be taken when caring for oriental rugs.

Whether you have a fine handwoven, antique Persian or a funky bright, contemporary shag, you want your work of art to be cleaned or restored thoughtfully and carefully. Natural fibres such as wool and cotton require different care from nylon or polyblend.

Natural Fibres

Natural Fibres are produced either by insects, animals or plants. The fibres that are produced by insects or animals are referred to as protein fibres. Those that are produced by plants are referred to as vegetable or cellulosic fibres. Cellulosic and protein fibres share a common disadvantage, they are both very absorbent and will have extended drying times when cleaned. This can lead to shrinkage, mildew and dry rot.

Protein Fibers

These are produced by insects, or animals and include wool, silk and hair.

Our experts will determine the appropriate cleaning process for your rug based on its individual characteristics, such as its origin, type, material & dyes.

Here's a closer look at our rug cleaning process:

  • Pre-Inspection - We examine each rug, looking for signs of fading, discolouration, stains, pre-existing damage, colour instability and odours. We then select the suitable cleaning process.
  • Dusting - We remove dust and small particles lying deep within the rug, using compressed air. This step is often referred to as "air washing" or "dusting", and is far more effective than vacuuming or beating.
  • Pre-Treatment - Spots and stains are pre-treated using advanced spotting techniques.
  • Pre spray - Concentrating on sites of heavy traffic and soiling. Note: discolouration caused by wear, fading, or chemical reaction is not reversible.
  • Dissolving and extracting ground-in soil.
  • Rinsing In order to remove deeper soil and cleaning residue, and restore natural textures.
  • Hot water extraction
  • Restorative grooming with special grooming tools. Note: fibre wear or distortion is irreversible.
  • Bonnet pad dry cleaning
  • Final Inspection - We will conduct a thorough inspection of your rug. If needed, we will repeat any of the above steps until your rug is as clean and beautiful looking as possible.

Normal spotting and stain removal is included in our cleaning price and our steam cleaning process.

Rug Cleaning & Care Tips

The best way to keep a rug clean is to keep it from getting dirty in the first place. (As people do in most rug-weaving countries) It is a good idea if this accords with your lifestyle. Barefoot or sock-foot traffic is much more gentle to a rug than a hard outdoor shoe sole (or spike heel), and leaving your outdoor shoes at the entrance to the house tracks in much less dirt.

Wool Rug CleaningA Rug can be a purchase for a lifetime and for generations if cared for properly. Although you do need to get your rugs professionally washed and cleaned from time to time, you can always take extra care of your rugs by following simple, basic tips on cleaning and protecting your rug:

  • Rotate your rug periodically for even wear.
  • Vacuum on a regular basis. Be careful of fringe and the height of the beater bar. Consider not using the beater bar.
  • Use a quality underlay, pad or cushion to allow for cleaning and prevent slippage.
  • Have your rug cleaned only when it really needs cleaning.
  • Remove outdoor shoes when entering the house.

Rug CleaningRemember that regular vacuuming is necessary to keep your rugs in perfect condition. Soil particle removal is essential as the sharp edges of dust particles have a very abrasive affect on the rugs fibres.

My dog has marked his territory on my Persian rug. Can you help me or is my rug ruined?

The best method to remove the odor associated with pet urine is through a pre- treatment process and an immersion cleaning in our rug bath. Pet urine contains three components; 1) urea, which is the sticky, tacky component; 2) urochrome, which is the pigment or color element, and; 3) uric acid crystals and salts. It is these crystals and salts that cause the ammonia like odor that makes this the most difficult component to correct. These acidic crystals can also cause permanent dye damage, color loss and cause the fibers to rot. While we have been extremely successful in restoring most rugs there are some cases where the damage is permanent.
Are all rugs cleaned and treated the same?

In its simplest terms a rug can either be machine-made or man-made and made with either synthetic or natural fibers (wool, silk, cotton, bast, leaf and fruit). Then we also have construction types (tufted, woven and bonded).
I have a hand- knotted Persian rug. Some of the knots are losing their colour, is the rug falling apart?

What we have here is a case of "white knots". Your rug is fine - what you are noticing is an area where the rug's warp cords (cords that run the length of the rug) that have been spliced together while still on the loom. As the rug wears, the knots show through the pile of the rug as a small white knot.
Can bleach spots be repaired?

Sometime many of these spots can be repaired. A special colour restoration process has to be used to literally determine the colours that are missing, and replace them. On a difficulty scale of 1 to 10, this is a 9, and only should be attempted by a professional.
What is an Oriental rug?

An authentic oriental rug is a handmade rug that is either knotted with pile or woven without pile. In hand-knotted rugs, strands of yarn are tied into the flat-woven fabric, creating a pile and pattern. Oriental rugs that are made by machines, hand tufting or any method other than hand-knotted or hand weaving are not considered authentic oriental rugs.
Why are antique rugs so valuable?

For generations and many years of history, oriental rugs have been a luxury standard and proved many times their value increases over the years. Antique rugs are most valuable, because of the history they're carrying and time has enhanced their beautiful colors. A genuine rug can last for generations and is a great investment.
Where do oriental rugs come from?

These rugs normally come from a broad geographical region such as China, Vietnam, Turkey, Cyprus, Iran, Pakistan, and Indi
Oriental rugs are organized by origin: Oriental rugs are organized by origin: Persian rugs, Anatolian rugs, Kurdish rugs, Caucasian rugs, Central Asian rugs, Turkestanian rugs, Chinese rugs, Tibetan rugs, and Indian rugs.
How can I tell a good rug quality?

There are two basic things that show rug quality: 1) Small, tight knots and a fine pattern with a clear design on the front as well as on the back of the rug. 2) The wool should feel oily, and full of lanolin. Hand-made rugs are more valuable then machine made. The back of the rug will help you determine whether it is a hand-made rug or machine made. A hand-made rug had the same, vibrant design as the front of the rug. The more knots per square inch and the more intricate the design, the more valuable the rug. Silk rugs are most expensive rugs on the market. In addition when examining antique rugs other factors enter in. Originality, rarity and overall condition are important factors.
How long does it take to make a rug?

Authentic rugs are hand made - for a small 3 x 5 rug; it might take several months to make. Medium-sized rugs (5 x 8) can take up to a year to hand made. Very large rugs (10 x 20) might take a group of people a few years to complete. Larger silk rugs with up to 1,000 knots or more per inch, may take a lifetime to make.
Is an oriental rug a good investment?

Antique rugs are good investment because they increase in value since they are getting harder to find and getting to be very rare. When you buy an oriental rug today, it will always be worth what you paid for, but probably more. Over the centuries oriental rugs have become treasured heirlooms passed from one generation to the next. No new rug can achieve the look and feel of an old rug, which throughout the decades has become fine like wine.
How to inspect rug before buying?

Check the threads of the rug from both front and back to see if there are any breaks or cuts. Also check to see if any repairs have been done, if so, if they were properly executed. Check the pile for holes, stains and moth damage, especially in older rugs. Examine the colors for running by wiping a damp cloth firmly over the rug.
