Leather Sofa Cleaning

We cover all Melbourne suburbs

We can clean many different types of leather suites and sofas, it is very important to know which type of leather finish you have so as to select the right cleaning method. Some leathers are pigmented meaning most dirt will sit on the surface, others are semi absorbent, and some such as Nubuck and Suede are very absorbent. How to clean them is very important as using the wrong method for the type of leather can have disastrous results. It is also important to condition and protect leather so it lasts longer and resists spills and stains. Leather being a natural material, when a spillage occurs it will soak in and permanently stain. If however it is treated with a protector, this will allow you time to mop the spill before it soaks in. Different leather protectors are available for pigmented leather, anniline leather, suede and nubuck leather. We can also offer a leather repair service for minor colour repairs where the pigment may have been scratched or worn away.

Leather needs to be maintained, our technicians can recommend a maintenance regime which will make your suite last years longer and look much better. Remember, leather is not a maintenance free product!

Cleaning leather seats in cars or dining chairs is also important as both are subjected to harsh treatment by the sun and sticky fingers.

How do you recommend I do a basic cleaning on my leather furniture after you have cleaned it?

Basic cleaning of your furniture will require you to wipe your furniture two or three times a week with a soft rag or vacuum. Make sure to be carful while cleaning, it is important that soft materials must be used when cleaning leather because it can scratch easily, affecting it's distinct grain or finish.
Will you be able to tell what kind of leather my couch is and what the best way to treat it?

Different animal skins are used to produce a variety of looks in leather. All leather comes from one source, the hides of animals. The most common comes from cows. All leathers are processed in similar manners to achieve the look and feel of a particular purpose. Once the leather is tanned and processed, certain sections are then selected for use on a particular application. This process determines the type of leather that will be made available to you. In almost all situations, similar tanning and dyeing chemicals and processes are used. Many different types of leather are used. The most common, Top Grain (coated) leather is used in almost all automotive and furniture upholstery. This type of leather is the most durable and easiest to maintain. Aniline (Nubuck) is a form of leather with a very soft feeling. Usually there is no finish, leaving it unsealed and susceptible to dirt and staining. Suede is a form of this leather.
Do I need to do anything to maintain my leather furniture if it does not appear dirty?

We recommend cleaning and conditioning your leather every year or year and a half. Oils in your leather dry out and evaporate even when your leather is rarely used. It is important to replenish these oils as well as occasionally clean the leather to protect it for years to come.
Can you clean my car interior as well as my leather furniture?

Yes, leather interiors in automobiles take a lot of abuse from sun, water, and dirt. Our cleaning and conditioning process will help your interior last as long as your car.
I have a leather chair that is not in the best condition but it was expensive and I don't want to throw it out, do you think you can help?

we can usually help the appearance of your leather quite a bit, and of course leave it physically clean. Removing soils and oils also prevents them from chemically attacking the leather finish, and penetrating into the corium (substrata). As your leather ages, however, microscopic cracks develop which can become stained. Eventually, refinishing becomes necessary to achieve significant cosmetic improvement.
What does your conditioning process do for my leather?

Our thorough, hand-applied conditioner restores beneficial oils and water to your leather to help maintain optimum moisture content. This keeps it supple, which helps reduce severe creasing which can lead to cracking.
How long should my leather be conditioned?

it depends on how you use it, and how harsh your environment is. Exposure to sunlight and air flow accelerate the drying-out process. Rule of thumb; every 6 months to 2 years.
After you condition my leather will it rub off?

No, it will not rub off. We use only the dyes and finishes that were used when the leather was originally produced. The new finish is as hardy as the original finish.
Will the conditioner change the feel of my leather?

Although every situation can be different, it should feel very close or exactly like it did when it was new.
Can you service my furniture on site?

Yes! the best part is we can minimize the 'down time' of your furnishings by having one of our technicians work 'on site' to expedite any cleaning and conditioning that is needed.
Can I condition my leather couch myself?

Yes you can but we recommend levying it up to an expert for the best possible results! It is possible you will not use the right product and end up doing damage. Many products suitable for, say, saddle leather or footwear should never come near your upholstery, as is the case with some "cleaning protectants" which contain silicones.
Do you dye leather?

No unfortunately we do not dye leather.
Do you repair rips and tears?

We do not repair leather rips and tears.
I have an oil-based stain on my cushion, what can I do?

Oils have a tendency to dissipate into leather. As such, small concentrations of oil may gradually disappear. To accelerate the process, apply dry corn starch directly to the affected area, covering the stain. Let the corn starch draw oil up out of the leather for 4-8 hours. Gently wipe away, and then repeat the process as necessary. Keep in mind that this is a home remedy with no detriment to the leather, but of limited effectiveness.
Would I be better off just buying new furniture if my leather needs a lot of work?

Maybe, if your furniture is what we call "disposable" quality. We suggest that you consider several factors in making this decision:

Did I buy quality in the first place, and am I therefore confident that the frame
and foundation materials are worth retaining?
Do I still like the style and function of the piece?
Do I want to shop around for new sofas?
Do you charge to come out to my home and look at my furniture?

It is not always convenient. If we come to you, we charge a small fee, which is credited toward the cost of any work, which you have us do.
Do you have any tips of how I can maintain my leather couch after you clean and condition it?

  • Rotate cushions every 30-60 days for even wear, depending on the amount of use. Remember to exercise poly-fill bag by fluffing and redistributing the poly-fill evenly throughout.
  • All leather will fade. To protect your leather, do not place it in any form of sunlight. Do not place your leather furniture near windows, under skylights or beneath similar forms of light. Keep medium to large windows closed when you are not home (exposure to the sun even for a few minutes a day will affect your leather). Open grain Nubuck and aniline leathers are extremely sensitive to direct or indirect light.
  • All leathers perform better when preventative maintenance is practiced. Using a white lukewarm damp rag dust off arms, seats, and back pillows once a week.
  • Use only recommended cleaning products on furniture every 3-6 months, or more often if needed. This will prevent body oils and salt from your skin being absorbed into the leather, which are harmful and could affect the look, feel and longevity of your leather. After leather is clean and dry, re-protect with leather cream.
  • Take care not to place your furniture too near a radiator or similar heat source. Make sure there is at least 2 feet of space between your furniture and heat source.
  • Only use cleaning products where they are recommended. Many new generation leathers are susceptible to colour loss when cleaners are applied. Warm distilled water applied to a soft white clean cloth is recommended for these leathers.
  • Ask us about out regular cleaning schedule that we can offer you to help you minting your leather furniture the best you can keeping it beautiful and new!
  • We specialize in fixing all of the following:
    -Food stains
    -Beverage Stains
