The most common types of carpet repairs we are called upon to carry out are inserting patches to replace worn or damaged sections of carpet, stair carpet repairs and repairs to faulty carpet joins.
Common problems would include cigarette burns, iron burns, bleach, red wine, pet stains, tears and rips etc.
Repairing carpets in this way involves cutting out the affected area and then replacing it with a spare piece of carpet which has been cut to fit. The carpet repair is then glued into position.
Clearly, you will need to have a spare piece of carpet available for this type of carpet repair. This can often be accomplished by taking material from underneath a piece of furniture.
Loose stair carpet can sometimes be repaired simply by refitting the carpet back onto the carpet gripper underneath. In other cases we may need to lift and refit the carpet completely in order to leave the stair carpet repair in a safe condition.
Individual treads that have become worn can also be replaced without having to replace the carpet on the entire flight of stairs, thereby extending the life of the carpet. Repairing stair carpets in this way does require you to have some spare carpet for me to use for the repair.
Your carpet joins might have split or perhaps the carpet has come away from the metal joining strip under the door. With split seams these can sometimes be repaired by being broken open and re-seaming.
Carpets that have come away from doorbars can be repaired sometimes by stretching and some times by fitting slightly wider doorbars.
How often you need to do your carpet repair, to a large extent, depends on you. Burns, crushing, bleeding, fading, furniture indentations, sprouting and carpet beetles among many others are some of the common problems faced by many. Most carpet repair jobs can be rectified without professional help, but there may be instances where you might need professional help.
This happens when a cigarette butt burns the carpet. If the burn is small, the burnt carpet fibers can be cut with scissors. For larger burns, you may have to replace the area with a new piece of carpet. You can either have a carpet installer do this or you can even do it yourself. Make a paper template slightly bigger than the hole. Cut out the damaged section using your template. From an unnoticeable corner (or another room), cut the template-sized carpet with a sharp knife. Now, fix it in the hole and seam the edges.
Fuzzing happens when loose fibers come out of the carpet edges. All you need to do is carefully cut the fibers sticking out.
Heavy furniture can cause indentations to occur on the carpet. To get rid of these ugly marks, sprinkle the carpet with club soda and placing a towel, iron over the area. Wet it again and iron it a couple of times. You can see your carpet re-fluffing.
Heavy foot traffic causes the surface of carpet to flatten, which may give some carpets a shaded appearance. In such a case the carpet repair job is to brush and vacuum the area. Crushing and matting also occur in areas of heavy traffic. The pile becomes flat and the carpet begins to look worn. If home re-fluffing methods fail, you may need carpet repair help from professionals.
Shedding happens when, with usage, fibers surface on the carpet. This is not a manufacturing defect, but a normal occurrence. Here, the carpet repair job entails vacuuming the area. Snags are tufts that have pulled out of the carpet surface. They occur more in loop pile carpets than cut pile ones. Never pull them off. Just cut them neatly with scissors.
A carpet is said to have sprouts when there are tufts on it, which are longer than the rest. Pulling them will only damage your carpet. Instead trim them neatly with scissors and level it with the rest of the pile.
Treat a stain immediately, before it can dry. Blot the liquid with a blotting paper or damp cloth but avoid getting the carpet too wet. To remove stains that have already dried, spray with a commercially available carpet cleaner and allow it to soak in for a few minutes. Then blot up the liquid. Do not rub stain. When dry, gently brush to restore pile. Go here more information on how to remove stains.
Tatic electricity, among others depends on the material of the carpet, construction and carpet padding. Humidity also plays an important part as moisture in the air is absorbed by the carpet fibers. If there is sufficient moisture present, there will not be enough charge build up. Humidifiers help to retain moisture. You can also spray the carpet surface with an anti-static agent. Take care however, you buy a non-sticky anti static agent, to prevent carpet soiling.
Carpet beetles are small insect pests that cause damage by feeding on a variety of animal based material in homes and other buildings. The best carpet repair job in such a case is strong vacuum suction. Avoid spillage and keep the carpet surface clean of food materials. Carpet beetles feed on wool, fur, hair, hides, seeds, grain, cereals and flour. Take care to clean the dark and undisturbed places in your house, as carpet beetle and their larvae thrive at such places. Use of naphthalene flakes or balls can give you limited protection. If however, your carpet is badly infested we can send one of our professional cleaners to help you. For more information about carpet beetles click here.
Bleeding is the loss or transfer of color from one section of the carpet to another. Good under-layments can help prevent bleeding to some extent. Crocking is the loss of the carpets excess color when rubbed. So, avoid getting your carpet wet.
A neat carpet installation job can reduce your carpet repair worries to quite and extent. Sturdy seams (to hold the edges) and high quality adhesives (to avoid chemical odors) are things you can ensure. Although there are many small carpet repair jobs you can do yourself, sometimes a trained carpet installer can do a better job with old, worn or torn carpets.
